Gay Pride Month in the USA has captivated the world throughout June. Marked with a celebration of rainbow flag-filled parades, the occasion has once again opened people’s eyes to the inclusive nature of many different regions in America. Even though the festivities will soon be drawing to an end for another year, there are a number of LGBT communities that showcase a similar degree of diversity, fun and progression all year long. Here are just three that you might want to visit once you’ve arranged your ESTA visa.
West Hollywood, California
West Hollywood is tucked away conveniently between the bright lights of Hollywood and the luxury of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California. Estimates reckon that around 35,000 residents identity as LGBT – and many of these can be seen congregating around the world-famous Santa Monica Boulevard. Here you’ll find copious amounts of bars, restaurants and shops catering to the gay community.
San Francisco, California
San Francisco became a haven for gay men when soldiers were based there during World War Two. By 1977, the city had elected the country’s first openly gay man to office when Harvey Milk joined the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The crème de la crème of the area is still The Castro – a district that countless gay men call their home. Its streets are lined with the gay-friendly cafes, bookshops and, of course, bars.
New York City, New York
The modern gay rights movement kick-started at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich, New York in 1969. 40 years later, the area is still a popular hangout for both gay men and women. That said, members of the LGBT community now regularly frequent other nearby regions, such as Chelsea. Both of these areas include a variety of clubs, diners and gyms intended for the gay population.
What are you waiting for?
These LGBT hotspots await all tourists looking to experience some of the most diverse aspects of America. Anyone wanting to book a trip to these destinations should remember that they will need an ESTA visa before being allowed to enter the USA. This travel document usually lasts for two years and tourists should remember to apply for one before any flights or hotels are booked.
