Heading to Chicago for a holiday or short break? Here’s a few things we think you should see and do during your time there.
Try the beaches
Perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Chicago, but the Windy City has 26 miles of beaches spread along the coast. With Oak Street beach being the most popular, it tends to get the most visitors, but it is well situated by the city. For more seclusion head to Montrose Beach, while North Avenue Beach will reward you with great views of the city.
Ice skating with a difference
Try ice skating with a difference way up in the 94 storey John Hancock Observatory building. It’s a novel way to see the spectacular skyline. While ice skating 1000 feet in the air, you can check the views as you wizz around the 900 square feet ice rink.
A taste of the Old Country
Chicago is also host to some great Irish music. The connection with the Emerald Isle is easily felt in such bars as Chief O’Neil’s and the Abbey pub. There are many venues around that play traditional Irish music. It’s the perfect way to get a glimpse of the Old Country.
Spot a forgery
Do you want to know what a million dollars looks like? At the Federal Reserve Bank you can even have a go at creating your own unique currency. Would you know what a forged bank note looks like? You can test your expertise by trying to identify the genuine article from forged notes when you visit the Federal Reserve Bank. Entrance is free.
Films in the park
In the summer months you can simply enjoy a film right outside in the park. There are around 150 parks dotted around the city that partake in hosting an outdoor cinema screen. Bring a bite to eat and just sit, relax and enjoy a film. You can see anything from current box office hits to older films. Admission is usually free but be sure to get there early to ensure a space.
Whatever you decide to do in the city, make sure you apply for your Electronic System for Travel Authorization otherwise known as ESTA. You can apply any time before you go, but obviously the sooner the better so you can enjoy a hassle free trip when you go to Chicago.
