An all American road trip is top on many people’s bucket lists, and California is hard to beat for awesome drives, great scenery and super cool cities. This is a trip that can be completed in as few as 7 days, or expanded across a longer time for a more leisurely holiday. We’ve picked out main cities to stop at and you can choose your route based on the types of roads you like driving and the smaller destinations you’d like to stop at in-between.

San Diego

The southern-most destination on this trip, San Diego is sunny and offers beautiful coastlines and a true Californian lifestyle. There’s a great food and wine scene with fresh produce and local wines on offer at many of the city’s eateries. Mission Bay is great for relaxed water sports – rent a kayak or a paddleboard to work off your lunch.

Los Angeles

LA is California’s biggest city and there is always something going on. Santa Monica offers a stunning beach with a pier boasting scrumptious restaurants and a carnival of rides. Alternatively, visit Universal Studios for tours and rides. Famous Beverly Hills is home to the stars and the much photographed Walk of Fame, as well as Rodeo Drive. Sports fans can also catch a game here, or if music is your thing then you’re in luck – LA is home to LA LIVE, the Staples Centre and the Nokia Theatre.

Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Wine Country

Santa Barbara has a mediterranean feel and climate. Loads of delightful Californian wines are made here amongst the Santa Ynez Mountains. Visit the Old Mission Santa Barbara and kayak under Stearns Wharf. Then head north to Santa Ynez wine country for fantastic wines including Merlot and Cab Franc.

San Francisco
